Music That Doesn’t Suck 19: Noumena
October 26th, 2009 1:04 pm

Rage - SoundchaserNoumena – “Prey of the Tempter”
From the album: Absence

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Why this song doesn’t suck:
Finnish melodic death metallers Noumena may not have many albums under their belt, but what they do have are chock full of kick ass riffs, memorable hooks and some of the most addictive metal tunes I’ve ever heard. These songs get stuck in your head… you’re sitting at your desk, working away on your website, and the next thing you know you’re humming a Noumena tune under your breath, absent-mindedly headbanging to yourself. I’m sure that happens to everyone, right? Right? No? Well… I don’t know… fuck off, these songs are still good.

While Noumena’sĀ  2002 debut ‘Pride/Fall’ and their 2006 release ‘Anatomy of Life’ both contain a slew of excellent metal tunes, their 2005 album, ‘Absence’ is where the real gems lie. From the catchy-as-all-hell opening track, “The End of the Century” to the album closer, “The Great Anonymous Doom” (which, I feel I must add, is a balls-crushingly badass song title), ‘Absence’ is overflowing with rifftastically memorable tunes.

4 Stars!

Not since the much loved/hated ‘Blair Witch Project’ (a movie I enjoyed greatly), have we seen a marketing campaign for a horror movie quite like the one for ‘Paranormal Activity’. Initially only opening in 13 cities across the U.S., horror buffs had to go to the movie’s website and demand the movie be brought to their neck of the woods. That “want what you can’t have” mentality combined with a trailer and reviews promising the movie will make you crap your theater seat and hork your dinner in the aisles resulted in ‘Paranormal Activity’ not only becoming a big success, but becoming a fucking HUGE one. With a total production budget of only $15,000, ‘Paranormal Activity’ has currently managed to pull in nearly $37 million dollars. 37 goddamn million dollars. Now, I’m no expert, but I’d have to say that’s quite the modest return on investment.

So, yeah we know this movie made an assload of money. That’s awesome, good for them. But as any moviegoer who’s had to sit through an overhyped shitpile knows, tons of movies that rake in the big bucks are complete dogshit *cough*transformers2*cough*. I think the questions that most people need answering are these: is this movie any good and is it as scary as all of the reviews and trailers are making it out to be? The answers, my dear readers, are “yes” and “ehhhh, not quite”.

7th Son: Descent Cover7th Son: Descent
Written By: J.C. Hutchins

Promo MP3: Yeah, click play on that little thing down there. Come on, do it. DO IT.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

From the jacket copy: As America reels from the bizarre presidential assassination committed by a child, seven men are abducted from their normal lives and delivered to a secret government facility. Each man has his own career, his own specialty. All are identical in appearance. The seven strangers were grown — unwitting human clones — as part of a project called 7th Son.

I know it may blow your mind, but from time to time I read shit that’s actually printed on physical material. Yeah, like paper. And ink. You know… books? And there’s one book I’m looking forward to getting my stubby sausage fingers on later this month, and that’s “7th Son: Descent” by J.C. Hutchins. What started as a serialized podcast back in 2006, “7th Son” is finally getting the treatment it deserves thanks to St. Martin’s Press and the thousands of devout Hutchin’s followers who have been eating up the audio version of this story for years. And when it comes to “7th Son”, J.C. ain’t fucking around. Not only is he giving the masses the gift of his words in glorious print form, he’s also releasing new audio podcast and PDF versions of the novel for free on his website and BoingBoing.net. Holy hell! Now if you don’t read at least some of it, you’re just a lazy, unappreciative fuck.

If you’re not familiar with the fantastic acoustic guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela, you should be kicked square in the teeth. These fiery Mexicans know how to crank out the jams! They may not be “metal” in the usual sense of the word, but they sure know how to take a classic heavy song like Metallica’s “Orion” and create one kick ass cover tune. More kickassingly, as rumored on several metal blogs across the net, Rodrigo y Gabriela’s Oct 17th performance had a very special guest… Rob Trujillo, bassist for Metallica, who joined the band onstage for a very special performance of that very tune! Check out the video below for some groovy guitar goodness:

G.I. Joe PosterDirected by: Stephen Sommers
Starring: Channing Tatum, Dennis Quaid, Marlon Wayans, Sienna Miller, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Christopher Eccleston
Released: August 7, 2009
2 Stars!

I’m going to keep this extremely short and sweet: if you are a huge fan of the 80′s G.I. Joe cartoon, was obsessed with collecting the action figures or were an avid reader of the comic books, this movie will piss you right the hell off. While Stephen Sommers has indeed created an escapist action/fantasy movie much in the same vein as his ‘Mummy’ and ‘Van Helsing’ efforts (read: shit), his vision of G.I. Joe bares almost no resemblance to the real American heroes of childhoods past.
