Urban BreedDanish metallers Pyramaze are currently one of my favorite bands. Their style of aggresive, often progressive power metal makes for quite a few interesting and epic tunes that never cease to get my head banging and the devil horns waving. The songs “Mighty Abyss” and “What Lies Beyond” are a couple of my all time favorite tunes and really show Pyramaze’s talent at constructing well-crafted and catchy material. With their newest release, Immortal, they tapped ex-Iced Earth frontman Matt Barlow to fill the band’s vacant vocalist slot. Barlow had long been working as police officer in Delaware after retiring from the music industry in 2003, and I couldn’t have been happier to hear he had seemingly returned to his true calling after 5 years of silence. Since my ears were first blessed with Barlow’s diverse, powerful voice, I’ve been a huge fan and I was happy to see I’d be able to rock out to some new tunes fronted by the man himself.

However, once Barlow returned to Iced Earth (a decision I back fully, as I absolutely love that band), it seemed Pyramaze would need to find yet another voice to express the energy and soul behind their music. Luckily for me and every other metal fan out there, it seems they’ve done just that. Earlier this week, Pyramaze mainman, Michael Kammeyer, announced that after many long months of auditions for a new frontman, they’ve chosen ex-Tad Morose frontman, Urban Breed to join the band’s ranks. Michael’s comments from pyramaze.com below:

Dear friends,

After auditioning some really good singers during the last couple of months, we have finally found a new band-brother -none other than singer extraordinaire Urban breed (ex-Tad Morose) has joined our ranks, and we are all very excited. Urban is well known for his powerful voice, stage presence and great diversity. We welcome Urban into the band, and we hope that our fantastic fans will approve of this choice too. Trust us when we say there’s no one better to fill out the big shoes left by his predecessors. To those of you who do not know Urban yet, I would like to encourage you to check out the MP3′s at the end of this announcement – this is just a little taste of what Urban sounds like. Please note – the songs are NOT new Pyramaze songs, but material from Urban’s past recordings. Thanks for your attention, and now on to a statement from Urban himself.

And let’s hear what Urban Breed himself has to say about it:

Hello everyone,

I am very pleased to join ranks with the great guys and talented musicians of Pyramaze. I’m looking forward to the challenge of filling those big shoes and working with these guys live and in the studio. I think we have a lot to offer each other, and I hope Pyramaze fans are as excited as we are to hear us working together.

Urban Breed

Urban sounds to be an excellent choice to round out a band like Pyramaze. While I love Matt Barlow’s voice, I didn’t feel it quite fit Pyramaze’s sound as well as previous vocalist, Lance King‘s sweeping, higher-pitched voice did. From listening to some of Urban’s work in Tad Morose, the main comparison I can make off-hand is that he sounds quite a bit like Blind Guardian’s Hansi Kürsch… which is most definitely a good thing. I look forward to hearing what Urban brings to the band (aside from a badass name of course) and will keep my fingers crossed that they will make it over to the states to tour sometime soon.

Ooh nice, I’ve only got one album by Tad Morose, “Matters of the Dark” and I like it quite a bit. I think he’ll fit well.

Leave a freakin' comment.
