I must have robot ears.
April 2nd, 2008 7:03 pm

Bodom! Bodom! While I can’t resist the screeching tone, causual strumming, or frenzied riffing of the king of all musical instruments, the electric guitar, I can’t help but be drawn to the mechanical sound of Industrial. It must be the geek in me that just loves the artificial, synthetic sound of an inspired industrial or electronica track. This seems odd since, technically speaking, the Industrial / Electronica sound isn’t all that far removed from the clicks-and-pops sound of many hip-hop “artists”.

Perhaps it’s because the sound is a little dirtier… less commercial or clean and much, much darker. A good track can take you on a journey, build up excitement, inspire you, energize you. The fact that many Industrial bands, such as Front Line Assembly, KMFDM, Ministry and Skinny Puppy also incorporate many metal elements into their music sure doesn’t hurt either.

Perhaps my taste in music has been changing the last few years, but it seems most of my favorite groups these days integrate some kind of electronic sound into their music, especially metal bands. Keyboard, synthesizers… more and more metal bands seem to be adding this to the mix, and I have to say that the sound they bring adds a lot to the overall tone and atmosphere of their performances. Bands like Children of Bodom, Dream Theater, and Nightwish bring the keyboardist out from their hiding places at the back of the stage and into the spotlight where, honestly, most of them deserve to be. Janne Wirman of Children of Bodom belting out a finger-blurring keyboard solo is an amazing sight to see. Hell, Tuomas Holopainen is practically the heart and soul of Nightwish. Most people pass the keyboardist off as just a tacked on addition to a band, but in a lot of cases a band wouldn’t be anywhere near as interesting to listen to without the sound they bring.

So don’t be hatin’ on the keyboard players people. They kick ass. The only way Janne Wirman could be any more amazing is if he used the geekiest of all musical instruments: the keytar. And remember that if you don’t like Industrial, Techno, or Electronica… you probably just need robot ears. Get on that.

If you don’t know these bands, you damn well need to:
