Music That Doesn’t Suck 9: Muse

Muse - AbsolutionMuse – “Stockholm Syndrome”
From the album: Absolution

Why this song doesn’t suck:
A lot of people may not attribute the word “metal” while talking about the English rockers Muse, but you have to admit many of their songs have the intricacies and heaviness that can be said for any good heavy metal tune. Much like fellow Brits Porcupine Tree, a great deal of their songs are heavy on crunchy guitar work as well as progressive songwriting techniques. I think an excellent example of their hard rockingness is “Stockholm Syndrome” from their 2003 album Absolution.

One of the huge draws for me to Muse is the fact that you can actually hear bass in their songs… learning how to play the band’s fan-favorite “Time is Running Out” was great fun and pretty damn rewarding once I had it down. Matched with some excellent and catchy guitar work, a good deal of well-placed keyboard work and Matthew Bellamy’s lively vocal performance, and you have one hell of a high energy track with “Stockholm Syndrome”. I’d highly recommend Absolution as well as Black Holes & Revelations (which features the Guitar Hero III callus-builder “Knights of Cydonia”) for some catchy, well-written, and undeniably heavy rock & roll.
