Music That Doesn’t Suck 8: Eluveitie

Eluveitie - "Slania" Album CoverEluveitie – “The Somber Lay”

Why this song doesn’t suck:
One of my favorite bands of late has been folk metal asskickers extraordinaire, Eluveitie. As I’ve said before, any band that can seamlessly meld electric guitar with a goddamn slew of flutes, whistles, fiddles and bagpipes deserves and rightly gets my full admiration. You’d think it’d be hard to make a songs as heavy as “The Somber Lay” work with a whistle into, but Eluveitie pull it off quite nicely… and it’s something I’m glad to say they are able to reproduce perfectly live in concert.

As one of the bands gracing the Paganfest tour last year, these guys simply tore up the stage with their eclectic mix of folk-influenced melodic death metal. It’s something I look forward to witnessing again when they embark on Paganfest II with Korpiklanni & Primoridal early this year.

Their new album is going to be completely acoustic, so I’m pretty excited for that since I find most of their material pretty generic and boring. Definitely a fun live band that and I really look forward to Paganfest 2.
