Music That Doesn’t Suck 5: Nightwish

Nightwish - "Over the Hills and Far Away" EP CoverNightwish – “10th Man Down”
From the album: Over the Hills and Far Away (ep)

Why this song doesn’t suck:
I’ve been a big fan of Nightwish for several years now. My first real dose of these symphonic power metal dealing Finns came from the “Wish I Had an Angel” single from their 2004 album Once. Ever since my ears were treated to a heaping dose of orchestra-infused, guitar-heavy metal excellence matched with Tarja Turunen’s angelic, operatic vocals, I’ve been addicted. I often find myself fiending for my Nightwish fix, and few tracks feed my hunger better than “10th Man Down” from the Over the Hills and Far Away ep.

Sadly, as of 2005, Tarja is no longer with Nightwish. However, unlike many Nightwish fans, I can actually appreciate new vocalist, Anette Olzon’s style and sound… I actually think she brings a nice freshness to the sound of the band and I absolutely love their latest album, Dark Passion Play. Still… when I hear songs like “10th Man Down” I can’t help but wonder what amazing performances we’re missing without Tarja’s contribution to the band.

Note: I couldn’t for the life of me get the damn flash player to show the MP3 title. I blame Nyck. Dick.
