Why this song doesn’t suck:
When it comes to the death/clean combo singing style that accompanies many melodic death metal bands, few vocalist can hold a candle to Scar Symmetry’s Christian Älvestam. Though his band’s style and sound are quite reminiscent of Soilwork and many other melodeath bands past and present, in this metalhead’s humble opinion, Christian’s range of clean singing and death metal growling brings Scar Symmetry front and center. It’s almost hard to wrap your mind around the fact that it’s the same person producing the vocals on these songs. Plus the fact that they can write a heavy, catchy tune with the best of them doesn’t hurt either. My first taste of Scar Symmetry was with this album, their 2006 release Pitch Black Progress. Though it was the opening track, “The Illusionist“, that initially and almost instantly addicted me to these guys, I felt like posting something some may not have heard just yet…

“The Kaleidoscope God” is a 7 minute rocker that shows off the band’s chops perfectly. It has diversity, Christian’s amazing vocal work, and a bit past the halfway mark, a nice change-up that brings a grin to my face that any lameass breakdown could never possess me to crack. While I know these guys are a bit trendy sounding for some, and I have to admit I was underwhelmed by their live performance, I still love every album they’ve released so far.

Sadly, after 2008′s Holographic Universe was released, Christian left the band to persue other musical ventures. If the fact that the remaining members of the band had to hire two new singers, one for the death vocals and another for the clean, isn’t proof that they had one hell of a previous singer, I don’t know what is. Either way, I still look forward to hearing what these guys have to offer in the future.

One Comment for “ Music That Doesn’t Suck 14: Scar Symmetry ”

I absolutely hated these guys live, and have refused to listen to them on album because of that. This song didn’t do much to change that, really. Though thats more to do with me being incredibly bored with melodeath as of late rather than it just being shitty.
